La construction du fort d'Agra débuta en 1565 sous le règne de l'empereur moghol Akbar et fut terminée par son petit-fils Shah Jahan. Classé par l'Unesco sur la liste du Patrimoine Mondial, sa fonction militaire initiale fut rapidement abandonnée pour en faire un vrai palais des merveilles.
